Dylan Goes Electric Tumblr - A Tunawax Production

Tunawax is the 2009 intercontinental dryhump champions. But rather than hold it over your heads, we’re giving back…Finely picked dance tracks to go cotton to cotton with.

A darkling sense, furtive grinding with a little madness sprint to climax; but ain’t that the way you like it. Rodion’s minimal acid lines have been keeping things moving in new directions, ain’t cooling weather a beauty? Already scoping out some winter lines to ride.

Mixtape Monday: Crook’d Mouth
August 31st, 2009 |

Some weekends need weekends to recover from, and all together insipid, still are footings for a change in speak thought. So when I wake up and Monday is another Monday, I can at least put my mind somewhere warm and grateful. Ups to DJ Frosty for doing damn fine dub/roots/reggae mixes. Certainly some of my favorite out there.

Time is short and it doesn’t return again. It is slipping away while I write this and while you read it, and the monosyllable of the clock is Loss, loss, loss, unless you devote your heart to its opposition. Tennessee Williams

This song has been in my rotation for a long time and it never gets old. Which probably means my taste in music is bollocks. But bollocks it is then for me. Could never find this whole album, so if anyone has it, drop me an email.

Whatever happened to rappers getting hype on shit? Why is everything so “laid back” these days? Feck that. I want some bangin beats and a quick tongue flow to rock my ear hole. Someone should start to make party music again… maybe it’ll be me. I’m ready to ride.

Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!

Syl Johnson’s raw soul and funk has always been a deep favorite of mine. Somewhat always pushing outside of what the mainstream doing, Syl still managed to break into the charts several times, but never gaining the real recognition that he deserved, which he explored early on in a wave of introspection and churning wonder on Is It Becasue I’m Black?, which then became something of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Although this song certainly resonates with more than black folks, the sound system crews were quick to pick up on it and make it their own.

Mixtape Monday: Soul Survival
August 24th, 2009 |

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.
– Hunter S. Thompson

I wouldn’t call this entirely rare soul becasue the whole mix isn’t soul, and I guess I can’t really say how rare it is, because I know a whole lot of this stuff on here. But I’m probably not the typical music listener, so maybe it’s all rare, and then so are we.

Sunday Soulfood: Sometimes
August 23rd, 2009 |

Have you got any soul?” a woman asks the next afternoon. That depends, I feel like saying; some days yes, some days no. A few days ago I was right out; now I’ve got loads, too much, more than I can handle. I wish I could spread it a bit more evenly, I want to tell her, get a better balance, but I can’t seem to get it sorted. I can see she wouldn’t be interested in my internal stock control problems though, so I simply point to where I keep the soul I have, right by the exit, just next to the blues.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever – John Keats

There is hardly anything more frustrating or disheartening than looking for something that you cant find, or expecting something to be where it isn’t. It doesn’t really matter what it is; could be keys or a paper, could be love, could be god. Whatever it is, seems like it should be there, you believe it should be there, you think you’ve done the right things for it to be there, but it’s not there. There are reasons you expect it, there are reasons you’re hopeful, there are reasons why you have set your faith on something to be where you need it, and you want it to be there, you hope for it to be there, you pray for it to be there, and it’s not there. Then you’re left to deal with the idea that maybe what you had is lost, or to doubt love, or that you’re alone in the world. This is when someone inevitably tells you that if you stop looking, stop assuming things are real, and stop expecting things to be anywhere, then you wont be disappointed. Actually, very few people say that, they are cynics and atheists ( although they tend to call themselves realists). Most people say to keep looking, or to stay the course and keep hope, to have faith, and continue to believe. I guess because if you don’t try, if you don’t give what you have, then you’ve not done your all. Or maybe becasue to believe in something is better than to believe in nothing. Which just makes it all the more frustrating and disheartening when what you look for isn’t there and you don’t know why.

Save your own soul. Believe in magic.

Remember the choose your own adventure books? Well thats sorta how this next section is. First  up is a Masterminds song from Stone Soup, which is an album that approximately 12 people bought, (11 are on sale on amazon, I’m keeping mine. Actually, mines on vinyl. So there.) Anyhow, you’ve never heard this shit before, but it’s the Masterminds so expect content of substance, that is to say, a subject matter with a message. Eek. I know I know… it’s not mindless sex drug party music or 80’s-throwback-retro, so maybe you better just skip it and go to the second one.

During college I took a bunch of geology courses for my BS, in these courses we would inevitably have to go on some fieldtrips to hike “highly educational” geological formations, and I think give our teachers the opportunity to smoke, drink and pick up on students while under the guise of an educational experience. Not that I gave a shit, getting out of a pit class to walk around the woods is something I’d do if anyone asked me to; but if you missed the fieldtrips there was always makeup work in the name of a 5 page paper or something similar, it was just easier to go. The story here is that a day or 2 before one of these mandatory trips I went skating, and perexplore I must have sinned against love that week as behold the angel of rolled ankles doth visited me and severely wrecketh mine foot. Now I know a rolled ankle because this shit had happened before, and I swear upon my life that I would rather break my leg in 2 than roll an ankle, rip the muscles and tendons clear apart and endure 2 months of a swollen floppy purple foot. I mean, purple from the bottom of my calf to the middle of my toes. When it happens, my heart sinks and I get cold and I feel sad in the universe, It’s garbage to the end of the earth. Now what I do when I roll an ankle is… nothing. I don’t look at it, I don’t touch it, I don’t even take my shoe off until I try to bathe, and even then, I don’t take the sock off. I don’t want to know anything about it. So when it comes to the field trip, what do I do? I put on an ankle brace, and I go. I tell the teacher that I might be slow, and I proceed to walk like a retard who can’t bend (or hardly stand on) his foot, up and down rock formations and I take notes. So whats the point of this whole thing? Well, maybe I don’t have one. Maybe I just wanted to tell a story to illustrate how ridiculous I am. Or maybe shit happens and you deal with it and move on even though it kills you.

Maybe, when people have been hurt and are afraid to let themselves be vulnerable, it doesn’t matter what you do, or say, or what kind of person you are, because nothing is going to change that they aren’t going to open up. The only thing that changes their feeling is time, and if you hang around and put up with their shit long enough, and keep coming back, then one day in the future, some magical day of in the unknown distance, it might occur to them that you’re not going anywhere. Nothing before that magic day is going to make too much difference, and it doesn’t really matter to them if you’re a good person or not, or that you could be a cheat, a moron, unreliable or an addict, all that matters is that you’ve passed the test. Whatever that test is. And if for some reason, you can’t hack it. Maybe you aren’t willing to put up with the affectionate void, or the lack of commitment, then you are the one with the problem and they don’t have to think about it anymore. But then again, maybe not.

Syl johnson is fucking magnificent. I’m done being serious. really.

Thursday Throwback: Stolen Onions
August 20th, 2009 |

John Lee Hooker recorded Onions on Vee Jay in 1962, and Booker T & the MG’s recorded Green Onions on Volt (then on Stax) in 1962. They are strikingly similar compositions, The former being just a little over 2 minutes in length, and the latter being about 3 minutes in length. So whats the story? I’m not one to keep spreading rumors, but the way I heard this story is that Booker T kinda sorta um… stole the riff from John Lee Hooker. I don’t recall all the details, but if I remember correctly Booker T liked the sound and proceeded to  funk it out as much as possible which lead to his recording, if anyone wants to jump in with some real facts I’ll be happy to post them up. The reality is that it doesn’t matter, this isn’t a case of someone getting famous off of someone elses music while the other wallows in obscurity.

John Lee Hooker was perhaps the most heavily recorded bluesman ever. With a sound and style so personal that his catalog is virtually a one-man blues subgenre, Hooker is always instantly recognizable — even though early on, he frequently worked for several labels at once, under his own name and as Birmingham Sam, Delta John, Johnny Lee, Johnny Williams, Texas Slim and Little Pork Chops.

Booker T. & the M.G.’s were an instrumental soul band that was highly influential in shaping the sound of Southern Soul and Memphis Soul. In the 1960s, as the house band of Stax Records, they played on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla and Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. They also released instrumental records under their own name, such as the 1962 hit single “Green Onions”. As originators of the unique Stax sound, the group was one of the most prolific, respected, and imitated of their era.

According to some relic of a zine called the Rolling Stone, the band formed by accident one day in 1962, when seventeen-year-old keyboard player Booker T. Jones was in a Memphis studio waiting for rockabilly singer Billy Lee Riley to arrive to a recording session. He and drummer Al Jackson, bassist Lewie Steinberg and guitarist Steve Cropper began jamming on the melody that would become “Green Onions.” Stax Records president Jim Stewart liked the tune so much he decided to record it and put it out as a single.

I always say “Get in where you fit in” and it seems like thats what may have happened here. No harm, no foul.

I mentioned Terry Mullan last week, she here is a bootleg Terry Mullan mix from Porcupine Rocketship, and a fine example of the type of shit that was going on in the Midwest back then. I was thinking about trying to dig out the flyer for this party to post up, but I think I gave them all to my brother and I don’t feel like trying to sort through all his stuff. Thats it thats all. If anyone has a more complete version or any other bootlegs from this show, give me a holla. Such as either of the two Scotts from cottonmouth.
