Throwback Thursday: Queen Supreme
October 1st, 2009 |

3 things +1. 1. If you ever find a moment of self doubt and don’t know what to do, no matter the situation, Nina Simone will tell you what to do in a way that brings you home. 2. Her voice is the comforting thunder of knowing, understanding, empathy, and commiseration.  That “I’m one of you, too” warmth and whit she put into her songs and performances is what was consolatory and empowering about so much of the soul/gospel/blues (aka black) music, and what is missing from it (and any other music really) today. 3. A couple of my favorite Simone songs for you on this collision course with the tomorrows to come (+1) This photo is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. If anyone has any idea who took it, I’d love to know. Email me at mail at djnodj.com.

Titties Out Tuesday: The Countdown
September 29th, 2009 |

I need some coffee. brb. Ok, so. I guess I should just be upfront about this… I have no real reason to count down to anything. This just sort of came together on its own and I let it. Like sometimes I wake up and something is in my head. Sometimes I wake up and wonder where my pillows went. Sometimes I just dream of buying Legos. I wish I did have something to count down to.

Fingerbanger Friday: All Out
September 25th, 2009 |

I can feel the fall creeping through the air. It’s saying “time to slow down” be at peace. But I’m up and can’t sleep at night. Restless for activity.

This is secret crate material right here. A gem that took me a good while to hunt down and just drips with light nylon cotton fur fun. Songs like this are the real reason record players were invented. Less is Mo. This is why you love me though.

I got to work this morning and booted my computer. I got to work this morning and attempted to boot my computer. A missing system32/config file is damn near a kick in the balls. Crippling and once you regain your wits, you sorta want to bash the shit out of something and scream obscenities like Tommy Lasorda. So how does that relate to this song? Here comes the magic… sniff enough whiteout and anything will make sense, it will also make you buzzed and a little dizzy. Pretty much what this song does too. Did you figure out what I just did there? Me either. But I think Washington is calling. Or is it Wyoming? Damn this song is sick.

As soon as I open my mouth about dub step, someone will email me something like this. Uncoordinated, clammy, awkward … just like sex in the back of a car. Perfect for a damp fall night of tossing and turning.

I’m getting tired of every turdrocket song trying to be a acidline / bassline killer singna tune blah blah blah-ooring. Over and over and over I have to wade through an increasing amount of same sounding garbage from same sounding artists posted on same sounding blogs. Always the problem with Dance music was how repetitious it is, and all the kids trying to jump on the bandwagon just think that they are going to be super producers because they watch a youtube video on how to loop shit in ableton and download a glitchy VST just don’t get that it take more than that. The end result is my ears bleed and I cry.

So here is a good track to warm up and cook something good to. Ya’ll can thank me with a bowl of stew, or some Tilapia, or some rice krispie treats. We love you too.

Fingerbanger Friday: Fuck Terse
September 18th, 2009 |

This is exactly what I need to hear. Granted, its sort of another song paying homage to how down hip hop was. But Munga, A-Nice, Ashy and DJ Action Rick (The Lytics) bring a whole vibe that isn’t just how cool it use to be, but how much in love we all were with it, corner to corner. Plus, this feels good just to feel good. Pick up the album Here. Facebook them Here.

I think 2 out of 3 dubstep songs I hear use the same fucking bassline. Someone might say, “jeagh guy, but tis FIRE line yo.” And I’d say, “But when eretings on fire, soon it all be burned to ground.” Really, the death of dubstep will be it’s lack of innovation. Until then tho, This Stranglers remix could be fun at the right party… like, one of those parties where kids have patches saying PUNKS NOT DEAD. To which I show them my patch that says DISCO’s NOT DEAD…EITHER.

The list of songs I almost post up is getting long. But last minute changes happen. this week… there was a different song right here, and at this precise moment, I’m feeling some Welder. Also known as ESKMO (coming to a mixtape monday near you), this is not quite dubstep in my book. A little abstract, from The Chalice Well (buy it here).

I lover this / I don’t lover this. Tame One and Del… doing it by not doing it. Yet another song about how cool hiphop …was. Seems to be what hip hop is about. That and Jay Z (seriously?) But the ‘off the cuffness’ of this song is what catches me. When Tame loses the beat and doesn’t seem to give a shit, thats hot. When Del… um… is Del, thats hot. I’m not flippin over this song. I’m just saying, I’m glad these guys are at least having fun in the studio.

I’ve come to see that anyone can make up a little bit of truth. Ideas about art, love, violence, order, chaos, right and wrong… good…bad… it’s all convincing.  Universal ideas are the oatmeal of the universe, but flavor it with too much cynicism or fear under the guise of truth, and it’s a poisonous meal for you.  So the intake is garbage. Lets exhale some too. A big Fuck You to every one that looks for little tidbits of self affirming facts pulled from every angle that they can find to justify their stance on any particular issue. Spending more time convincing themselves than anyone else, but if someone is worth two bits of shit, eventually they’ll admit they don’t know shit from shinola. What have you done? Looking for anyone to comfort them with their little made up bits of truth. Oh… You were too good for them. Oh… early to bed, early to rise. Oh… life is a party. Whats the motivation here? Paste over the holes in our whiskey distillation so that our purity doesn’t escape, and 180 proof our way into impotence of action, cover it up with a little vodka, or should I say Viagra. Whats left? A bunch of bullshit we invent to prop ourselves up, lying all day long, kicking the dogs we don’t understand, thinking we do. Dirty fuckers can’t give a bone worth chewing on, and think you’re the victims. This all puts me in an awkward situation. – Fuzzy C
