Its takes little to say that Shortkut is one of the best tablists on the planet, and for that matter, anywhere else. In this (once extremely rare) mixtape he reconstructs famous hip hop beats by finding the original breaks and cutting and juggling them into the recognizable head nodding versions we all know so well. Put it in your blaster and blast; get it while it lasts.

Mixtape: DJ Shortkut – Rekonstrukted Elements (don lowed) (58 minutes)

The air is finally coming in. An eclectic gathering today to take any direction forward. Juxtaposition is the essence of the collage. Positive tension creates energy.  Negative tension is damn near death.

Reckless, energy, noise / alt-rock, pipes, ect. Everything that can be said about these guys has been said better by someone else. I’ll just make note that their album is self released (Always support the DIY). And I’m hoping to catch a show by these guys in the near future. If thats not enough, you’ll have to listen to the song too. (facebook)

I know that this isn’t completely original (ta’raach beat and all), but something about it is fun in the same way the old Slum Village was. A little off. A little on. Dust it off like an old 12 inch!

Heres something that got left in my email a couple weeks ago and that has been in constant rotation since. Atmospheric garage jam sessions and recording machines in the East San Jose. Thanks guys.

“This track was inspired by a shut-off notice the power company left on our door that night.”

I have to let this post off light, to match the mood the the weather we’re having; record breaking warm temperatures. And its not just the heated fighting to blame. Pilooski ( Cédric Marszewski ) floats this Nora Dean’s “Angie La-La” sample into a delightfully melodic banging house track that I just can’t play enough. I’d love to see this bring home a dancefloor somewhere.

Some may be prone to ask why dubstep neither dubs nor steps. It’s common misperception that it would be a combination of those two elements. But infact dubstep is named after it’s inventor Dubberious Steppinopoliski, a fine collector of semi-precious stones, books about moss, and wobbly bassline VST’s.

Bassnectar new musical endeavor Timestretch (amazon) seems determined to out-wobble even the most wobbly basslines by crushing sounds and glitching like he was signed to Def Jux. This particular song though, has enough room to breath that it doesn’t get it’s bloody beetroots all over your favorite jeans… if you know what I’m saying? You don’t?… oh…. well nevermind. One sick as groove from a fellowship of musicians.

Dryhump: La Methode & Dj Vadim – Maximum ( Bassnectar & Ill.Gates Remix) (don lowed) (no more nectar… )

Titties Out Tuesday: Cold Tight
March 30th, 2010 |

This song is a few years old, but still gets love from the Tunawax crew. Seems like electro is harder to find now that everyone makes it.

… we are always outside ourselves, never quite ‘with’ ourselves, always divided and pulled in many directions … we find ourselves doing many things that we do not really want to do, saying things we do not really mean, needing things we do not really need, exhausting ourselves for what we secretly realize to be worthless and without meaning in our lives. – Thomas Merton

Shem McCauley aka DJ Streets Ahead aka Slacker quietly dropped Start A New Life (amazon) a few whiles ago, a through and through beautiful album of roomy wandering songs that are always housing around downtempo.

Is it a return to the conscious lyricist? While many continue to speculate on the health of  the economy hip hop, Homecut (Testiment) bellys up and rips intelligent rhymes over jazzy beats on No Freedom Without Sacrifice like it was 1996 all over again. The poets are making dents. Join Homecut on Facebook.

I really can’t help myself when it comes to things like this. Unreal boom bap-ish burner that hangs heavy on the groove and spanks that Alton Ellis into a mouth mashing frenzy. Though, out of respect for these Bastard Jazz monkeys, I can’t give this one away (unless they tell me to…which they haven’t). You’re going to have to collect yet another prize possession and buy the 7″ Here. Or Here. Or go digital on itunes.

In terms of today’s electro overkill bass wobbles dance music, these songs aren’t much. However, these mature earthy tracks were dance floor burners once upon a time. They weren’t made for the discos, they made the discos. Songs as expressions of life. Songs that transcended their original intent. Songs that could take you on a journey and let you off feeling good.
