“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” – Einstein

“I’ve been making a list of the things they don’t teach you at school. They don’t teach you how to love somebody. They don’t teach you how to be famous. They don’t teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don’t teach you how to walk away from someone you don’t love any longer. They don’t teach you how to know what’s going on in someone else’s mind. They don’t teach you what to say to someone who’s dying. They don’t teach you anything worth knowing.” – Gaiman

Too often, we’re introduced to the natural sciences by a route that seems designed to repel anyone with a degree of sensitivity to beauty: hacking away at brain-dead frogs, calculating the trajectory of imaginary cannon balls, and coaxing minuscule electric currents from vegetables.

Throwback Thursday: Mmusik
May 24th, 2012 |

Dimensional Intrusion (1993) was one of Richie Hawtins (aka Plastic Man) first albums put out under the moniker F.U.S.E. (Further Underground Sound Experiments); perhaps Richies strongest and most versatile release. IMO this album and this song in particular really encapsulate the architecture of early techno music and what was going on in the scene at that time. The sound was a vision, a homage to machines making it and the infinitely expanding outer edge of the technological wave. The future finally sounded different; advanced as the phreakers and hackers that were taking on telecoms one dumpster diving, social engineering call at a time. It was future primitive and we were the tribe. Get the whole thing (part 1) (part 2)

This is another sort of benchmark track for me, though more personally than genre defining. This is around the time when I transitioned from more electro/hip hop/freestyle to electronic. It also was a further separation from those that were listening to Vanilla Ice/Guns n Roses. Though I was still listening to a lot of Ween & Primus.

There are a couple cool things about this song. 1. Ray Barbee was/is an iconic professional skateboarder that makes some jazzy music. 2. Mochipet was once remixed by Ana Sia, who thinks I’m hilarious… but doesn’t return my calls anymore.

Nick Rosen is a 27 year old contemporary LA beat/jazz/psyche bass musician from Sherman Oaks, CA  that I’ve found through Build An Ark. This is from his Orchid Room 7 inch out on Porter Records, a joyful piece of jazz freshness, gently burning with late night charm and effervescence. ( I didn’t write that last bit… I don’t use those words in combinations like ‘gently burning’)

from the man at the helm of the Nostalgia 77 ship Ben Lamdin, this is one of the draws of the Summer as the Brighton bunch turn their hand to a live, afro psychedelic funk band called The Skeleton.

He says: “Skeletons is a made up band. I kid you not – it doesn’t exist. These musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions we were working on. This record is like a guy, pieced together and ready for the bonfire… Some of the music here started life as commissions for a library music company, pastiches and forgeries paid for by the current vogue for a certain style of African jazz. Once I’d done a few though I couldn’t stop… to me the whole thing has been a self indulgent forgery, an act of mindless fun. If it sounds good then it’s because I just enjoyed the music and enjoyed myself.”

From the Quantic man Will Holland and an international cast of creators, Tradition In Transition (Tru Thoughts) kidnaps the whole environment, making modern day conveniences distastefully baroque and gainful employment a trap. Listen to the music, quit your job, buy some sandals and a loose weave cotton shirt; go live somewhere without clocks.

Every generation seems to have its mantra that it pumps into every argument as the panacea for what is wrong with the world. These are often so morally pure and generic that they can be used by all for whatever their purpose may be. For a long time the rallying cry was, “do it for the kids”.  I dare you to try and go against that. Seen for what it is, the religious value system morality banner, this has become cliche as the new generation refuses to grow past identifying themselves as perpetually young. Youth have no need to protect the youth. Today, the new rally cry is all about the environment… Going Green Organic Sustainable Conservation Global Climate Change.Yeah, you can’t really argue against this. Not that you should try, as a rule we should always error on the side of caution when it comes to the damages we’re doing. Yes, stop shitting up the planet. But I’m fucking sick of the commodification of  ‘going green’ for the white savior emotional sentiment. Specially packaged in bio-degradable reusable triple recycled plastic to make you feel good about the fact that your carbon footprint is soooo much better than your next door neighbors. You’re different. You’re aware. You’re saving the planet with your consumption, and the more you buy the more you save. (In business the idea is: We’re losing money on each item, but we’ll make it up in volume). You’re not the problem, you’re the solution. Good on you. But energy is the new currency, and sustainability is going to get monetized until it’s meaningless; cliche.  Don’t believe me? How about you Save the Rainforests or Feed a Third World Child for a Day.

But yes, buy organic; it just tastes better.

Jalapeno Records is at the epicentre of the UK’s funkiest dance labels… so they say. They also call this a ‘percussive hypnotic ragga bomb’ and thats pretty much right on, so maybe they are.

A woman’s shoulders are the front lines of her mystique, and her neck, if she’s alive, has all the mystery of a border town. A no-man’s land in that battle between the mind and the body.

Equinox Records deserves a place in your mind of relevant labels that have been killing it softly for a good while now. I’ve featured many of their artists, and I’ll continue to support. You should too.

Even the idea of getting back to nature isn’t new. It’s been a concern since nature was still nature, and the wild-frontier was still a wild frontier. They hardly had electric and they already felt detached.
