Dylan Goes Electric Tumblr - A Tunawax Production

Just a glide along a ride a long time naw…

Up until recently I had never heard the term slugabed. Although I had heard napster. and um… lazy fucker. And then shortly thereafter I heard slugabed (myspace), so i had to conclude it must be some cosmic serendipitous sign, a call to duty maybe. So here is slugabed with one of the mostest chopped rocked lo fi commodore 64 coolerest wonky remixes of any ODB song I’ve ever heard. Big ups and I’ll be on the watch for this kid…

When it rains, make babies. Thats what I always say. But I think falty dl (aka Drew Lustman) might say, when it rains, make some dubstep/garage/glitchy/sorta mess ( I give up people, theres not a  real good way to describe all these musicians sounds anymore). Then again, if I take into consideration his album cover and myspace page… he might be more inclined to say, when it rains, make babies with beautiful retro women from 30-40 years ago. But whats important here isn’t that, but moreso that there are some cool sounds. Buy his album Love is a liability on boomcat here.

I don’t know what to make of this. DJ Parker remakes a remix (?) with monkey business from DJ Moneyshot who also re-edited the remix (here) from Caspa who remixed TC’s Wheres my money, a track I could care less about. But This Jungle Love Monkey Buisness is something else, and I’m all ’bout it (as the kids say).

I’ve been listening to 40 Winks this week, letting it echo about my house, and so here’s one of the more engaging tracks. Fits perfect with snowfall and snowflakes and thundersnow… actaully, we didn’t get any thundersnow. Checkout or Buy more from these Antwerp boys (myspace) buy here .

Hobo Junction was a mythical rap group that I would hear about, but never could actually find their music except on the rare mixtape. It just didn’t exist in my part of the world. Maybe in Oaklawn, but not in Sloshkosh. That was at least until they jumped label to release The Cleaners on Baraka Records. I was pretty excited when I picked up that LP, but it wasn’t really accessible to me. Again, maybe due to the geographical differences.  However, this song stood out to me. Not sure if this group still exists, but they have some good songs… if you can find them.

Throwback Thursday: Native Heads
December 3rd, 2009 |

I recall when Turntable lab had a Cross Country edit by Monk, and I would listen to it over and over on my dial up….buffering…2 seconds of audio….buffering…3 seconds of audio…buffering…. these days, the intercube is good for music. Oh so good. Tasty. Delectable even. Back then, you were either in the know, or you weren’t. If you knew a sample, it was probably because you had dug dig dug like dig dug to find it and pieced it together, and no one shared their secret samples.  The Jake One and Mr. Supreme conmen tapes were like gold and you would easily pay $20 for a shit bootleg. The well known Dusty Fingers records were the only game in town as far as sample compilations until it started to become big buisness,  and library beats became the new thing to unearth, and more often than not the bootleggers would cut the songs short and/or mislabel them so that you still wouldn’t know.

But I digress… This first song is widely referred to as the “common – 13 Chapters” sample, but I’m calling it the Ynot sample, because lets give credit where credit is due. Common just squeeked his late bloomer pubertyness all over it. But that ignores the fantasticness of the song on it’s own, which is … um… crazy good. So thats that. The other two songs are unreleased special tromboner material… leaked from people who know people, or something.

Tunawax is the 2009 intercontinental dryhump champions. But rather than hold it over your heads, we’re giving back…Finely picked dance tracks to go cotton to cotton with.

I love The Don Armando version of this song, although I don’t know if everyone shares my sentiment… especially when I play it out for some drunk baboons. That doesn’t stop me from doing it though. I’m also a ready established Tussle liker. Did that last sentence make your english teacher cry? I hope so. I abide by my rules in my land. This song also breaks bones when putting up lights, but no one ever walks in when the timing is right. spec.

Tuesday Tonic: Winrows Nature
December 1st, 2009 |

I’ve had this Bastard Jazz 45 since before asia had rice, and all I can say is… I had no idea I was playing it on the wrong speed. The original version is first, my 33 on 45 edit follows… The warble on the edit is because life has warbles. The clicks and pops are because Issac Newton invented gravity. Anyone remember the Newtons Apple on PBS? I loved that show. Personally, I still like my version better. I guess it all depends on if you’re cooking artichokes, or eating artichokes.

Fingerbanger Friday: Peel it Aside
November 27th, 2009 |

What does art and music tell you? Maybe about the romance and passion of the creators world? The inside. If they feel too much, and get rich, artists are considered geniuses. but if they feel too much and stay poor they are oddities, strange, or sometimes crazy. At least until they die, and then sometimes they are geniuses after all, just depends on whos buying.  I mean, piss yourself in the park, and you’ll likely be locked up. Piss yourself on stage and you’re just suffering for your art, as longs as someones there to pay for it. So what? Did you cry today because you reached a kid in class today and you made a difference? Did you wait in agony for days to hear something, anything, at all from that guy or girl? Did you invent, or do something to help someone because you couldn’t stop thinking about them? Did you give a hug and really really mean it? Did you feel something today? Really really feel something? I hope so, because thats your art.  Don’t tuck it away.

Too much shit has already been written about The Brian Jonestown Massacre for me to give a shit if you know their history. I’m not some journalist trying to glean a bit of fantastical edge for my own cool, and I’ve avoided posting them so far, partly because of … well, yeah. But since fingerbangers are all about what I’ve been listening to this week, and this is what I’ve been listening to lately, I have two things to say about them that I think are important interesting; hence two tracks (how did I pick just two? I didn’t. I had Fuzzy pick them for me… he took a break from watching Horton Hears A Who and building a printing press ( analog?) whatever)

1. The BJM catalog is (depending how you count it) at least 11 albums deep. 7 of those albums coming within the first 5 years of the bands “togetherness” with a total of 97 songs. Due primarily to the writing/arranging/producing force behind the band Anton Newcombe. Not many bands have done that. Whats more, not many bands have done that while independent of a record contract. I mean, the Beatles put out 13 albums in 7 years, but they had the money and team of studio musicians (Pretty Purdey included) with the most up to date recording studios & technology to accomplish that push. TBJM had… um…lots of drugs. The Beatles had lots of drugs too I guess.  Actually, almost every prolific band seems to have been keen on drugs. weird. Note to aspiring musicians: um…nevermind.

2. Why don’t more bands make more songs? Is it because they don’t have them in them? Or is it the money? It’s always the money people. Yeah, some bands get big and still write, but those are the bands that would be doing it even when flat out. They aren’t really in it to get a signed and blow up. They are in it because they don’t care to be doing anything else. Too many “musicians” see music as a way to make a living. And they have been sold this idea by the record companies that have controlled the music that we hear. What musicians should do is go down to their nearest art school and ask the fine art majors how many of them think they’re going to get rich and famous by painting or whatever, because they’re going to get a bunch of blank looks from kids going… ” I’m probably not going to make much money from my art, but this is what I love to do and so I’ve taken the poverty oath.” Heres the point: Musicians are (or should be) artists. money ruins art (for the most part). Part of me hopes that in the future, musicians have to take the poverty oath too… and then we can shake out the fakers. I’m not saying musicians shouldn’t make a living, but between it all should be the line of reality. Everyone I know is an artist. So what?

So really this is about music as art. Not music as business. I think Anton views music as his art, so incredibly intrinsic to his life that no amount of suffering for it is enough. Its that passion that shows us the depth of a persons love for something. And it’s all about love.

Lets Makeout Monday: French Toast
November 23rd, 2009 |

The Butterfly Bones emails are almost as cryptic as some of my posts… and I think they wanted fingerbanger status. However, thats all of 5 days away, and right now… that seems like an unnecessarily long time to wait for a song that can dig you out of your self indulgent upper/downer drug and alcohol hole you dug this past weekend.

“For a bunch of good looking people, you sure are boring and I can’t hang around with that certainty because it dies with the day. A peculiar assessment, She said. Maybe, I continued, Yet even those that don’t like me expect a lot. You think you deserve something, and you’re mad, she said again and again. I was mad with the desire to believe in an absolute, and fingering the perils of such belief in my mind all day. Of course I deserved something, a million dollars an ounce and I couldn’t give this much heart away. I thought that was cliche too, so I left out the window just to avoid the door.” – The DivineRaptor

Paper Chain emailed me about Naik’s debut album In the Shadow of Thunder Mountain ($8 on amazon). I’d like to say I listened to it and its awesome… but really I just listened to this song about 10 times, and maybe another twice. And besides, I wouldn’t probably ever say anything is awesome, I’d probably say it’s as good as being lost somewhere familiar. Which you wouldn’t understand anyhow. So, I’ll just say sick.

Some will try to argue otherwise, but my ears don’t lie… well, wait… let me back up. When I got the Fruit Meat 12″, I’ll admit I thought the A side was better. And then I grew the fuck up. The flow on this track is so good it makes me homesick, and I’m still here. If I recall the 12″ doesn’t have the sKdatching all over it… could be wrong… would prefer it though.

What a pain it is to fall in love so easily, with a sound, a few words, and a shared idiosyncrasy. On a scale from 1 to 10, you have no idea what I had to go through to get a good copy of this song. Not a fucking clue. It’s like the mystery of the deep, your deep, my deep… it’s nowhere. But oh so worth throwing an arm out of joint over.

One story goes… boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl break up, girl starts dating new jerk who is like the old jerk but newer, old jerk goes through several new girls trying to replace the old girl before settling for the only girl that keeps coming back no matter how badly he treats her.  Carah Faye was with Shiny Toy Guns, apparently she was over that gig, and is now with new gig Versant made up of similarly minded sunset watchers, and/or musicians. As far as Versant goes, it’s not my thing, and I’ll leave it at that. But I’ll admit I dig this unpolished Abba cover they did (internet poll selected). I get the feeling they didn’t take this serious, and maybe thats what I like, because according to the Versant peoples, they don’t have a recording of this song that isn’t taken from the video. Which I find hard to believe…so at their request challenge (and I do love a nerdy challenge), I ripped this from the intercubes. Until the powers that be shine upon us, this is as good as it gets.
