Back in September, the National Park Service began removing the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams, monsters that had been plugging up some of the best whitewater and salmon habitat in Washington’s Olympic National Park for a century. Then, a month later, they blew a hole in Condit Dam on the White Salmon River to the southeast. It’s not too often I find a whole album I like. The last one was the Gil Scott/Jamie XX album. And now Voyages, the debut EP from a 21-year-old Australian, Jack Vanzet aka Thurpence. Voyages, a  blissed out downtempo mood piece that seems to drift between ambient oceans and palm tree paradise… Comparable to Boards of Canada, Tortoise, Four Tet, etc. Perfect for this much-too-early spring rain storms.  I’ve posted the album player below so you can listen to the whole thing, and then head on over to the Thurpance bandcamp page to name your own price for the album. Easy and obvious things are easily forgotten because you never appreciate what you didn’t have to work for.

So I hope the visitors to djnodj really take the time to give thanks for what I do… by giving thanks to the artists. Thank them with your interest in what they are doing, and making, and thank them in a way that they can continue on their path. You know what I’m saying, much like any other artist, their craft isn’t overly compensating in any way. We cite motivations and expectations of wealth and fame in music as disgusting, but most of the art on this blog is meant to avoid that polluted pool. Of course, what can I really say of anyone’s motivations but mine. None the less, I know that the fuel for those that put their love into their creations is the appreciation (not adoration). So just because it’s here doesn’t mean you’re absolved from being human and stoking the fire of another. You don’t give to get. You get what you give.
