…and the only thing we care about, is not caring

The godfather of Rocksteady, the precursor to Reggae maker of the “Mad Mad” riddim, first recorded by Ellis in 1967 would later be recycled in more than one hundred other songs. The instantly recognizable three-note descending horn line was reinterpreted by Henry “Junjo” Lawes and eventually became known widely as the “Diseases” reggae riddim (DJNODJ post 28). “Diseases” is notably utilized in Yellowman’s hit song “”Zungguzungguguzungguzeng”, which has in turn has been sampled and reinterpreted by a long list of popular hip hop artists including KRS One, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur and Blackstar. This song has been in my knapsack for well over a year (down in the bottom by the fruitsnack wrappers and math homework)… which makes it somewhat of an ancient relic in terms of dance music, dug out and dusted off, photographed, tagged, and cataloged for auction. Like any mysterious gem from the past, this one comes with a curse too… You’ll really love it and it’s making you money.

Fresh new Emcee Sumkid: From an interview at the Mixtape Monster: Whether Chuck Norris is on drugs or not, he’s still dangerous. He will kick your ass up and down your street twice. There’s something ridiculous and funny about that. So just about everything I ran down in that song was something equal parts ridiculous and dangerous. Just so happens that ridiculous and dangerous is exactly the state of affairs in the world right now.

This is what hiphop is missing… some shit that enters your ear, creeps down into your gut and from there takes over the head nodding. All the cerebral rap is cool… and you know I love the party shit too… but it doesn’t hit like the Blahzay. PF Cuttin on the beat, MC out loud on the Pain I Feel.
