Every generation seems to have its mantra that it pumps into every argument as the panacea for what is wrong with the world. These are often so morally pure and generic that they can be used by all for whatever their purpose may be. For a long time the rallying cry was, “do it for the kids”.  I dare you to try and go against that. Seen for what it is, the religious value system morality banner, this has become cliche as the new generation refuses to grow past identifying themselves as perpetually young. Youth have no need to protect the youth. Today, the new rally cry is all about the environment… Going Green Organic Sustainable Conservation Global Climate Change.Yeah, you can’t really argue against this. Not that you should try, as a rule we should always error on the side of caution when it comes to the damages we’re doing. Yes, stop shitting up the planet. But I’m fucking sick of the commodification of  ‘going green’ for the white savior emotional sentiment. Specially packaged in bio-degradable reusable triple recycled plastic to make you feel good about the fact that your carbon footprint is soooo much better than your next door neighbors. You’re different. You’re aware. You’re saving the planet with your consumption, and the more you buy the more you save. (In business the idea is: We’re losing money on each item, but we’ll make it up in volume). You’re not the problem, you’re the solution. Good on you. But energy is the new currency, and sustainability is going to get monetized until it’s meaningless; cliche.  Don’t believe me? How about you Save the Rainforests or Feed a Third World Child for a Day.

But yes, buy organic; it just tastes better.

Jalapeno Records is at the epicentre of the UK’s funkiest dance labels… so they say. They also call this a ‘percussive hypnotic ragga bomb’ and thats pretty much right on, so maybe they are.

A woman’s shoulders are the front lines of her mystique, and her neck, if she’s alive, has all the mystery of a border town. A no-man’s land in that battle between the mind and the body.

Equinox Records deserves a place in your mind of relevant labels that have been killing it softly for a good while now. I’ve featured many of their artists, and I’ll continue to support. You should too.

Even the idea of getting back to nature isn’t new. It’s been a concern since nature was still nature, and the wild-frontier was still a wild frontier. They hardly had electric and they already felt detached.

When you start to know someone, all their physical characteristics start to disappear. You begin to dwell in their energy, recognize the scent of their skin. You see only the essence of the person, not the shell. That’s why you can’t fall in love with beauty. You can lust after it, be infatuated by it, want to own it. You can love it with your eyes and your body but not your heart. And that’s why, when you really connect with a person’s inner self, any physical imperfections disappear, become irrelevant. – Lisa Unger

There’s a strong case to be made about getting old and wanting to listen to the same music you did when you were ‘young and cool’. I read somewhere that it actually has something to do with a change in brain functions that have a harder time with unfamiliar patterns… or something. I’m good with concepts, not details. The point is that the music these kids are listening to is AWFUL and they’re all going straight to hell… Now Eric Clapton… he was a real musician. Where did I leave me keys?

Now, I’m going back to Alfonzo Rawls videos. Did you know he use to drill holes in the nose and tails of his boards and fill them with hardwear so that they lasted longer? True story.

Originally recorded in 1981, but not released until 1984, the 60 minute long e2-e4 is perhaps the seed that spawned a electronic revolution in music. Namely, Detroit Techno. Who knows how true that can be, since electronic music seems to have simultaneously emerged both in Europe and state side without knowledge of the other. But certainly it was a seminal work that is well credited as a major influence on early techno pioneers like Larry Levan, Derrick May and Carl Craig to more current notables like King Britt and LCD Soundsystem.

Recorded live in one take with no overdubs. The first half of the album consists mostly of a subtle rhythmic sequencer pattern along with a rhythm machine. As the piece unfolds, so do the variations of this sequence. At about the half-hour mark, Manuel brings in a stellar electric guitar lead while alternating between his electronics and sequencers providing further variations on the repetitive chord structure heard throughout the piece. Towards the end, the guitar fades out, the rhythm pattern echoes into silence and finally this long piece comes to its end.

I get waves of calm enfolded familiarity from a place I had forgot I had been before, and it feels like it was always meant to be, just as it was already before, waiting to unfold, full circle. Amazed.

What matters is not whether we live alone, but whether we feel alone. There’s ample support for this conclusion outside the laboratory. As divorced or separated people often say, there’s nothing lonelier than living with the wrong person. – I want to be alone: the rise and rise of solo living

Need of the week: Recorded in 1973 and released just as Brazil’s military dictatorship reached the climax of its long black arc, the one and only album by Satwa is a divinely subtle protest. Often cited as Brazil’s first independent record, the predominant sound of the disc is a northeastern folk / Eastern result of mixing of the zither played by popular Lula, and viola strings of 12 Lailson. Something like a succession of ragas and mantras, performed by Blind Aderaldo powered incense, mushrooms and other “mental muscle expanders”. Recent reissue by Mr.Bongo.
