If you dare to take up the banner of enlightenment, you will be attacked from all sides. From the inside you will be attacked by your own mind and from the outside you will be attacked by everyone else’s mind. Anyone who dares to succeed automatically presents a huge threat. If true freedom is going to survive within you, you have to be willing to fight for it. You have to have a sword in each hand at all times. One sword is for your own mind and the other sword is for everyone else’s mind. You must be ready to use them. Anyone who wants to be truly free must be willing to stand alone in the truth.” – Andrew Cohen

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those sharks come in and… they rip you to pieces.

As a History major who specializes in the history of early modern Europe, I’ve studied a lot of dictators in detail, not just Hitler. The number one mistake anyone could ever make in history is making the assumption that only inhuman monsters are capable of doing terrible things.

Stop dehumanizing Hitler just so you can reassure yourself that “normal” humans aren’t capable of doing bad things. Hitler liked children and dogs, he was a vegetarian and he cried like a little boy when his mother died. I’m not saying he was a good, innocent person, but when you stop attributing human characteristics to historical figures like Hitler, it’s how you overlook people just like him in real life, and it’s how people like him end up back in power. – Some Interweb Guy

I’m no liberal, and I’m sure I’m completely wrong about what Tucker meant, but when I hear some Libertarian say what they’re interested in is the “Progressive reduction of all government power in people’s lives down to 0” at any cost… I don’t hear a revolutionary cry of Liberty For All. What I hear is, We want to remove all monetary regulations, We want to remove environmental regulations, We want to remove all existing legislation that prevents us from being outright sexist bigots, and We want our slaves back. In total, we’re interested in realizing absolute financial and thereby moral authority, without anyone having any real ability to tell us we can’t, or shouldn’t, do whatever we want. At any cost. And we’ll sell it to you by making believe we’re just like you, and doing it ‘for your benefit’. Why do people believe removing regulation (however imperfect it is) meant to protect them is going to benefit them when it should be obvious the deck is stacked?

On a personal level I’m saying I understand that it’s really really difficult to let someone else think, act, and believe things that are fundamentally opposite from ourselves. It can be maddening because it shines a light right back onto what we believe, highlighting it, pointing out that if I admit that someone else isn’t exactly wrong… why do I believe that I am exactly right? It calls into question why we are how we are, why we do what we do, and why we believe what we believe. On a broad scale that level of introspection takes a lifetime of courage to question what we think we know, years of dissecting our motivations and logical flaws, diverging from our peers, and confronting that we’re really out here in the woods at night with no safe intellectual place to lazily lay down. And to go through life like that… acknowledging that you can’t know anything except for yourself… well, its very difficult and there aren’t a lot of reasons to do so. Though ‘do the least harm possible’ I think is a good place to start.

My key stroke and your key stroke were sitting by the fire, my key stroke says to your key stroke, we’re gunna set this world on fire.

There is absolutely nothing to be said for government by a plutocracy, for government by men very powerful in certain lines and gifted with ‘a money touch,’ but with ideals which in their essence are merely those of so many glorified pawnbrokers:”Theodore Roosevelt

I almost feel like apologizing for my lack of posts lately. But I’m not. Outside of my normal infinitely increasing responsibilities, I was out in the Tetons for a week with The Anxiety Sloth hiking, skinning, and riding and generally getting after it. After all that I just couldn’t be bothered. There were a whole lot of “I”s in that paragraph…  so obviously this is all about me. Minimally.

Recently I was thinking that perhaps that the most detrimental condition to a man is comfort. I’d go so far as to say I believe it’s almost the most singular goal of modern living humans to secure for themselves the highest level of comfort they can…for as long as they can.  We have built society upon the ideological foundation of secure comfort in the “American Dream” with the expectation of attainability so certain that it is perhaps ultimately perceived as deserved. And to that end we have obtained comfort to a degree that all the history of kings on earth combined couldn’t have imagined; such comfort that we think nothing of our ability to have a couple dozen fresh fruit varieties on our counters in the middle of winter, such comfort that perhaps a neighbor with rust on their vehicle  could be seen as struggling, and such comfort that popular media stalks the state of famous peoples lives more than the state of humanity. The power we posses in our pocket cellphone alone is so historically stunning that it’s easy to be ignorant that running hot water has really only been around since the turn of the century. Material comforts aside, how many of us plow a field? Cut down trees to build our house? Or sit on a barstool at the end of a hard day of sitting at a desk? Each progressive achievement of the next new comfort so spectacularly widens the illusory gap to past conditions that it seems obligatory that we attack and mock those that even suggest maintaining an awareness that the current state of existence is not a not a birth right, but only a temporary condition. And in the off occasion our comfort is shown to be an illusion, there’s little resilience left in us, only shock and outrage that indeed bad things still exist in our world.

Ultimately it’s this gap between the past and present conditions that as a society, and also individually, we’re so ill prepared to deal with that keeps us from making a stand against the corptocracy, the political corruption, the erosion of liberties, and so forth. We’re afraid to stop the ride because the cognition of what might be a hard reality where there is much less comfort is too daunting, too diminishing to our pride, too unfamiliar to be realistic. Taking into consideration the modern weaponry of our military, taking a stand might even be impossible. Here we need to believe the man behind the curtain. Perhaps quite literally for modern society, we’ve gone too far to turn back.

It’s difficult to free fools from the chains they revere – Voltaire

Robert Bork tried out that argument in 1971, in defense of prosecuting such victimless crimes as drug abuse, writing in the Indiana Law Journal that “knowledge that an activity is taking place is a harm to those who find it profoundly immoral.” It’s as bad an argument now as it was then. We may not like it that other people are doing things we revile—smoking pot, enjoying pornography, making gay love, or carrying a gun—but if we aren’t adversely affected by it, the Constitution and common decency argue for leaving it alone. My friend may feel less safe because people are wearing concealed guns, but the data suggest she isn’t less safe. – Happiness is a worn gun (harpers)

I would be a fool to answer that; it would mean pinning myself down. I was fascinated with Stendhal at 13 and with Thomas Mann at 15 and, at 16, I loved Chopin. Then I spent my life getting to know the rest. Right now, Chopin is at the very top once again. If you interact with things in your life, everything is constantly changing.
