Zimbabwe Legit made an album in 1992. It never got a proper release due to…um…music industry bullshit. You know how that goes. Biggie said it with Mo Money Mo Problems. But it’s money and power. Just another group caught up in the label game bouncing from indie to indie. I picked up this Hollywood Basic 12″ years ago, and tucked it away in the crates. I don’t know the full story, but this song is really Doin’ Damage In My Native Language (Shadows Legitimate Mix) by Zimbabwe Legit. However, no one knows them, and most everyone knows Dj Shadow, so this song is better known as Shadows Legitimate Mix.

So I’m rolling around in my 64 Impala reading Waxpoetics and generally just laxin’ when I run out of gas right in front of a goodwill. Now I’ve got hundereds in my wallet, but I’m not pushing 1000 lbs of chrome and steel in my Wallabeez. So I roll upinto goodwill to pick up some candy and bribe the kids sitting at the bus stop like a carrot on a string. I’m in the middle of loading my pockets with now and laters when I spy what looks to be some sort of cosmic mistake sitting in the bins of records. One handsome face. No, not my own. But one of Idris Muhammad. You know, the shit sampled by uhhh… zimbabwe Legit/Dj Shadow, Fatboy Slim, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys and others. Thats good and all, but this song is a gem in it’s own right. sexy.

It’s close to summer, and all I can think about is finding one of those launch pad blobs (like this) and some fat kid (like this) and getting some massive air. Thats on the summer list for sure. No bummers.

Also on my summer list is fight an octopus, fly fish, make some wine, observe more, play with motorbikes, get naked, camp, sail, build, and find a way to stay in jeans more. Canvas, leather, and grease. Creation doesn’t have to a heavy process, but sometimes it happen that way becasue thats the feeling.

This week, I save the best for last. Catacombkid dropped me a few tracks into my mailbox this week, and they have been on constant rotation since. Just good listening sounds with great feeling. You may notice they are not over produced, that is to say, they aren’t jammed front to back with ticks, tricks, taps, and scratches, these songs carry more weight than a lot of what I’ve been hearing lately. Less is Mo. Negative space isn’t always negative. Get it?
