I’ve said it before but I think it bears repeating that the fact that we’re so unaccustomed to and unable to cope with aggression, intolerance, and seemingly random violence, can be attributed to the overwhelming comfort that we regularly live in. It reminds me of the opening to the David Foster Wallace speech to Kenyon College in 2005 which goes: There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”

Our water is a version of comfort and safety that I don’t think is historically natural and at least to me seems rather, almost unnatural. Unfortunately this isn’t a sentiment that I believe many share. Certainly Jay Moore is in the water. Not as if Jay Moore is some sort of cultural barometer, but certainly his voice gets heard. We’re monkeys that have the ability to conceptualize but that doesn’t really remove us from the animal kingdom. Beneath all the moral manipulations and acclimation to the implanted civility mindset… are we or are we not at our core still savage pack animals?

If someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, I shall gladly change. I seek the truth, which never harmed anyone: the harm is to persist in one’s own self-deception and ignorance.” – Marcus Aurelius
