I’ve never walked into a record collection and found David Axelrod wax,  if those records weren’t owned by a seriously nerdy music appreciator, collector. Not that Axelrod is some obscure musician. A grammy winning producer, he was Cannonball Adderley’s producer of choice and did almost all of his work, also worked with David McCallum, Lou Rawls, Joe Zawinul, to name a few, and had several albums of his own arrangement, composition, and production. Still, the sophistication of sounds, built upon emotional nuances and structural twists, usually categorized him into Jazz-Fusion (sometimes calling him the father of fusion) and thereby categorically eliminating most music listeners who cant seem to get past ACDC and  DMB pop garbage. But Axelrod lives on. He’s one of the most sampled musicians of all time.

(Paul McCartney’s publishing company) “MPL alone has 89 samples and… I can’t stand McCartney. Let me tell you, he’s touring here. I should go to see him just so as I can throw a fucking grapefruit at him.” -David Axelrod

List of known Holy Thursday Samplers:

  • Artifacts – C’mon with the Get Down (remix)
  • Beatnuts – Hit Me withe That
  • Black Sheep – Without A Doubt (remix)
  • Lil Wayne – Dr.Carter
  • Apache – Tonto
  • Fat Joe – Bronx Keep Creatin’ It
  • Mix Master Mike – Black Level Clearance
  • INI – Think Twice
  • Quasimoto – Return Of The Loop Digga
  • Sublime – Doin’ Time
  • UNKLE – Rabbit In Your Headlights feat. Thom Yorke
  • Mr Complex – C.O.R.E. Mix

Not that he’s hot because he’s well sampled, but the other way around.  You can hunt out the rest though. I’m going back to the basement and working on my distillery.

Finding “Release Of An Oath” at Goodwill was pretty rad. I have a copy of Axlerod live in London on DVD if you want it. Email me your login info and I’ll upload it to your server.

YES! I remember hearing David Axelrod for the first time in college a few years ago and thought he was great. David McCallum is great too!
