Mixtape Monday:

At first a bit hard to get into, this mix grows into a continuous lisp towards the upper right quadrant of the workday, meaning if you’re not going to be making fuck to this mixtape, then by all means don’t think about it. Just keep drift to that upper right place and do your work. If absolute obscurity is important to your music, this doesn’t rank high. but if obscure and eclectic is important, I’d give this an above average injection. Decent mix for decent listening.

Twist my nuts like a fire hydrant, then I sink her
Her toes in my jim hat, bust off like a sprinkler
The honey winker, like (heehaw) I give up signals
Flip singles and strippers, so that they could jiggle

What were you down with in 1992? Were you shopping at the Merry Go Round? Rocking an African colored beaded necklace and a multi-colored woven belt? Does Cross Colors mean anything to you? A “Sox” hat that you made say sex? Malcolm X shirt? Do the names Whitley Marion Gilbert-Wayne and Dwayne Wayne seem familiar? Maybe or maybe not, but chances are if you get any of those refrences, then this mix by Dj Pone (Canned Beats) and Dj Spair (Oakland Faders) will take you back to your days of tight rolled jeans and loony toon jean jacket glee. enjoi.

Found this mix today and had to share it with as many people as possible. When Biggie and Pac passed I remember being a bummed, but when Big L passed I was straight up pissed. He was one of the few rappers I really believed when he talked about jacking fools and not giving a fuck, but, when you live that life, it catches up to you, and L was just another example of that.  It’s too bad, because his flow was incredible, almost untouchable. Enjoy.

Mixtape Monday: Hot Nerd
May 18th, 2009 |

Everyone knows someone named JP, Jay P, JaePee , J Pea, Jay Pee… if you don’t, I know one or two I can hook you up with.  Disco-y, house-y, nerd-y dance music wont help you look manly, but having a bigwheel with 12s and a lazer on the front might score you a chick worth talking to. Homebrew kits are good too. More mixes by this brother at djjayp.podomatic.com

Back in 1997, you would have considered yourself fortunate if you had even heard this mix. Its hard to deny that point in time as a pivotal one as DJs were really starting to break into the public music consciousness, and then go on a comeback run that would have turntables outselling guitars in Japan a few years later. At apex of that shift was Q Bert and the Invisible Skratch Piklz, who were the wacky gods to all DJs taking the art of skratching to a level no one had thought possible. Simulatenously DJ Shadow became the benchmark in instrumental hiphop when at the end of 1996 MoWax released his first album, Endtroducing, and followed up with an album of his singles, Preemptive Strike. Put together like the wet dream of some hiphop/dj stoner sitting in his bedroom saying, “What if Q Bert made a mix of DJ Shadow?” and hearing the world shudder and tremble at the idea… this rare and hard to get mix became instantly infamous world wide. Most people would have to wait until 1999 and napster that shit to get a listen.

Today this mix might not seem all that great, considering the advancements that even Q Bert has made in the 10+ years since its conception, and the somewhat dated sounds of Shadows tracks (still classic). However, don’t be fooled, this is where your Birdy Nam Nam type guys came from… so give respect where its due.

Mixtape Monday: Grace Jones
May 4th, 2009 |

Zula, the Amazon, errr… I mean Grace Jones is the subject of a new Grand Panda mixtape, made for the fashion house PAULE KA. This mix certainly isn’t for everyone… but if you’re looking to touch some abstract synthed out late 70’s / early 80’s New York art scene vibe, you know the deal.
